We’re going to talk about joy — and I know that can feel like a risky word at work.

Sometimes joy gets mislabeled as frivolous or unrealistic. Something we’ll get to later — once things calm down, once the pressure eases, once we meet our goals, once we have more clarity.

But leadership doesn’t happen in those imaginary future moments.

It happens right in the middle of uncertainty, complexity, deadlines, and emotion.

And that’s exactly why joy matters.

Joy Is Not Forced Positivity

Joy is not denial.
It’s not pretending everything is fine when it isn’t.
It doesn’t erase hard conversations, real challenges, or difficult decisions.

But it is deeply human.
Deeply practical.
Deeply necessary for our wellbeing.

When things feel like they’re falling apart, joy can be hard to conjure. It can feel misplaced.

So what if we thought about joy differently?

Joy as Fuel

What if joy is fuel?

Fuel that helps people reconnect.
Fuel that gives teams energy to keep going.
Fuel that reminds us we’re more than our roles, our stress, or our to-do lists.

When we practice joy in small ways, we build sustainable leadership.

Grounding Concept #1: Reconnect to Your Why

Focus on your purpose.

Why are you leading? Why does your work matter? Why does your team exist?

Especially in seasons of uncertainty or busyness, resurfacing your purpose reminds everyone of the positive impact you’re aiming to make.

Clarity creates confidence. Purpose creates energy.

Grounding Concept #2: Lead from a Cup That’s Not Empty

You cannot lead well from depletion.

Prioritizing your personal wellbeing will look different for everyone. But we know simple practices matter:

  • Staying hydrated

  • Moving your body

  • Spending time in nature

  • Creating intentional downtime

  • Journaling or thought downloads

  • Breathing or meditation

When your cup isn’t empty, you contribute more freely. You collaborate more openly. You stay engaged longer.

And you give your team permission to do the same.

Small Moments Matter

Joy doesn’t have to be grand.

It can look like:

  • Bringing laughter into a meeting

  • Expressing genuine gratitude

  • Celebrating small wins

  • Practicing curiosity instead of urgency

  • Sharing ordinary human moments

These moments don’t take away from results.

They support them.

When people feel human at work — when they know they are seen and that they belong — engagement increases.

You Don’t Have to Create Joy From Scratch

You simply have to notice where it already exists.

Name what’s going well. Invite humor. Create space for connection before jumping to the next task. Let personalities into the room — including your own.

These small signals say:

You belong here. You matter. We’re in this together.

Joy doesn’t make leadership less serious.

It makes it more possible. More sustainable.

Leadership isn’t about having everything figured out.

It’s about staying connected to yourself and choosing how you show up.

And remember — everything we do has a ripple effect.

Why not start that ripple with joy?

What Do You Think?

  • Where could you intentionally create one moment of light, appreciation, or connection — for yourself first, and then for someone else?
