I've talked about Insights Discovery on this podcast a million times. It's core to the business I run. But I've realized I'm not always the best at sharing what else is available beyond that first profile — and that's a flaw on my part, because I want people to have these tools at their fingertips.

So this episode — and the next one — are dedicated to teaching about Insights itself. My goal is simple: by the end, you'll realize there's so much more here than what you might already know.

Where I Started

Here's what I know about me: one of my core values is growth and learning, and I've always been this way. I'm the person who walks into a bookstore and heads straight for the self-improvement section. I got into leadership very early in my career, and then into human resources, which meant personality assessments, conflict styles, and strengths-based tools were part of my world constantly — partly because of the roles I sat in, and partly because I genuinely love them.

I was first introduced to Insights Discovery somewhere around 2007-2009, while I was in a leadership role in HR and our learning and development person brought it into our organization. Like the others I'd taken, I loved it immediately — the language was simple, easy to comprehend, and easy to apply in day-to-day life.

When I left corporate to try consulting, I decided to get accredited in Insights so I could bring it to other organizations. That was 2016. I've been part of this world ever since.

The Foundation: Four Color Energies

If you're new here — Insights Discovery is a model based on Carl Jung's work. It uses four color energies: fiery red, sunshine yellow, earth green, and cool blue. We all have a unique mix of all four. It's not a four-box personality type where you're "this or that" — it's understanding your specific combination and what that means for how you communicate and behave.

What makes it so impactful is that it gives people a shared, non-judgmental language for behavior and communication style — things that otherwise get mislabeled as "attitude" or "just how they are." When you have that language, it changes how you show up. And one profile can grow into an entire ecosystem of programs.

I'll always say this: Insights is data about you and about other people. It's not everything, and it's not all-inclusive. There's so much that makes us who we are. But it's a significant piece.

The Insights Family: What's Actually Available

Intro to Discovery — This is where it starts, and where I always recommend beginning. You take a short online evaluator and receive a personal profile describing your color energy mix, strengths, possible blind spots, and communication style. There's a two-chapter version (foundation and management) and a five-chapter version (adding effective selling, personal achievement, and interview chapters, with critical thinking coming soon). The two-chapter version alone runs over 20 pages. This is for literally anyone — you don't need to be in leadership. The workshop that goes with it runs anywhere from two to eight hours, with four hours being most common.

Managing Self for Performance — This takes your own profile and applies it to day-to-day self-management: how you plan, what you focus on, how you handle pressure, how you get things done. It's for anyone who wants to move from self-awareness into real personal effectiveness. It's a blended format with e-learning pre-work and an interactive learner experience, and it covers things like your ideal environment, managing yourself, and what motivates you.

Discovering Team Effectiveness — This rolls individual profiles up into a team-level view, using a framework of four areas: focus, flow, climate, and process. It's great for any intact or newly formed team, and every insight traces back to individual profiles.

Discovering Leadership Effectiveness — This looks at how someone's color energy mix shows up specifically in leadership behavior — running meetings, giving feedback, making decisions. It introduces four manifestations of leadership: results, visionary, relationship, and centered leadership. Truly effective leaders learn to flex across all four depending on the situation.

Self-Aware Leader (IDTL) — The Insights Discovery Transformational Leader profile goes even deeper, built off your individual profile. It highlights eight dimensions of leadership organized around leading self, leading others, and leading the organization. It's grounded in the idea that great leadership isn't one fixed style — it's the ability to flex across all four color energies depending on what's needed.

Discovery Full Circle — A 360-degree feedback experience layered onto your personal profile. It shows you how you see yourself compared to how your manager, peers, team, and even customers experience you. Unlike a lot of 360s, it's behavior-based rather than competency-based. It's amazing for anyone ready to close the gap between self-perception and actual impact.

Thriving Through Change — This uses your personal profile as a lens for understanding your own emotional response to change — deeper than a generic change management framework. It's great for individuals and teams navigating transition, restructuring, or growth, and it builds in some self-accountability for how team members respond to change.

Discovering Sales Effectiveness — This applies your personal profile across a six-stage sales model, helping salespeople understand their own style and adapt to different customer preferences. It transfers beautifully to leadership, too — leadership is also about creating vision, getting buy-in, and understanding what people need.

There's also a Resilience module that pairs well with Thriving Through Change.

It's an Enhancement, Not a Replacement

To facilitate any of this, you need someone accredited in Insights — someone like me. But here's what I believe: this isn't meant to replace any leadership development you already have in place. It's an enhancement. It's an add-on. I find it's most powerful when it's woven into whatever leadership development already exists — communication, difficult conversations, accountability, problem solving. When you layer Insights into those topics, the learning deepens. It becomes less cookie-cutter and more individual.

One Thread Running Through It All

Every one of these programs — whether it's applied individually, on a team, or organization-wide — traces back to that original personal profile. That's the thread.

If you're thinking, "okay, that's a lot, I wouldn't know where to start" — that's exactly what next week's episode is for. I'll walk you through how to actually choose where to begin.
