Message from John Silver

WELCOME TO THIS MAGIC MONDAY MOMENT

Kicking off your week with some thoughts around a favorite Disney quote (because in my world - Disney is life!).

original message date: 06/09/25

Happy Monday!

I often hear myself talking to leaders and clients about “the driver's seat”. Truth be told, I’m often talking to myself about it too! Who is mapping out your route? Who is taking the wheel? Is it you or is it someone else?

That’s why this quote by John Silver from the 2002 Disney animated film, Treasure Planet, caught my eye:

Be it the helm of a ship or the driver’s seat of your life, the metaphor points to a fundamentally human experience: choosing your path.

One of my values is centered around universal worth. Basically – this is the idea that every person has inherent, equal value simply because they exist - regardless of their achievements, identity, background, status, or behavior. Yet – as we go through life – we might find this hard to believe. Our ‘failures’, the messaging received from society or people in our lives, and our own limiting beliefs offered by our brains are just a few things that might get in the way.

I have fully experienced this myself.

But here is the thing…we all do have the makings of greatness in us – you included! Not because of your title, your awards, or the number of people who report to you - but because of who you are at your core. Your experiences, your values, your drive to grow and do good in the world - that is your GPS.

The kicker is this: no one else can chart your course for you.

You have to decide what matters. You get to decide the kind of leader (and human) you want to be. You choose how you want to show up for others - and for yourself.

And once you set that course, it will take courage and resilience to stay on it… especially when the obstacles come (and they will come).

It’s in those moments that your character is shaped. When you persevere with heart and belief, you strengthen your leadership muscle and your sense of self.

✨ Magic.

Remember, you don’t have to be (practically) perfect. You just have to take the helm.

Think about this – what course are you choosing to chart and how can you ensure to stay steady when you start to drift?

Wishing you a wonderful week. You've got this!
