WELCOME TO THIS MAGIC MONDAY MOMENT

Kicking off your week with some thoughts around a favorite Disney quote (because in my world - Disney is life!).

Happy Monday!

Here we are – mid September already! In Minnesota, where I am, the temps are getting cooler, the colors are just beginning to change and pumpkin spice is everywhere!

And as school is in full swing (I have a high school junior and a college freshman) – there is the energy of teens finding their place again. Really – this isn’t any different for most humans – regardless of age – when it comes to striving for a sense of belonging.

Actually - the need to be liked is just a natural human need. We have a desire to feel safe, valued, and included by the people around us.

I, for one, used to think belonging meant being liked by everyone in the room. If someone didn't warm up to me, I'd replay the interaction for days, trying to figure out what I'd done wrong.

This quote from Kermit the Frog resonates as a helpful sentiment as I figured this out:

That’s really it. We don’t need universal approval. That’s not even realistic. But what matters most is that one person who sees you clearly and stays anyway.

I think about this with clients constantly. Someone will tell me a whole team doesn't respect them, and when we dig in, it's really one or two people whose opinions have taken up all the oxygen in the room. Meanwhile, there are people right next to them who trust them completely - they just haven't been counting those.

Or I'll hear the fear that saying no will make them seem unhelpful, and therefore unlikeable. In reality, honoring your own time and energy rarely costs you people's respect. And if it does - that says more about them than it does about you.

Trying to earn everyone's approval is exhausting, and it's also impossible. What is more realistic, helpful and doable is finding (and valuing) the people who actually show up for you. And that is available to all of us – right now!

Pick one relationship where you already have that person. Send them a two-line text just saying thanks for showing up for you.

Wishing you a wonderful week. You've got this!
