Kicking off your week with some thoughts around a favorite Disney quote (because in my world - Disney is life!).

Happy Monday!
Happy Labor Day! Today is more than the unofficial end of summer – it’s a nod to hard work and hard-won rest. I hope you are enjoying your day.
This week’s quote is a deep cut for Disney fans. It comes from the song “I 2 I” sung by Powerline from Disney’s animated favorite, “A Goofy Movie”:
We are living in a world that is very divisive. So many labels. So many assumptions. So much understanding stopping at the surface-level (often times less-than-accurate) information.
It can get exhausting.
And listen – I have a human brain too. I have to stay very aware of this – because on certain topics and areas of life – I can easily fall into the trap.
But I know this...when we REALLY listen – and I mean with the heart first, not just the ears – the distance between people has a way of narrowing.
Think about it - two people can be standing right next to each other and still feel worlds apart. Not because they don't care, but because they're listening to respond instead of listening to understand.
I do this too (which I hate admitting)! Someone starts talking and part of my brain is already drafting my reply, or relating their story back to something of my own, or deciding whether I agree. That's not listening.
We know that actual listening is different. It's giving someone your full attention long enough to really understand what they mean, not just what they said. And – it’s getting curious. It’s digging deeper instead of just jumping in.
The division or distance we feel from people isn't always about circumstance (or busy schedules!). A lot of it is about attention and curiosity.
When we can lean into that – we can see people for who they really are. A human just like us.
This week, pick one conversation - with a partner, a friend, a coworker or team member - and try listening only to understand, not to reply. Notice what you learn and what shifts.
