I’ve taken the Insights Discovery assessment many times over the years. It’s one of my favorite tools to use with individuals and teams because it gives such a powerful language for understanding ourselves and others.
But this year, when I revisited my own profile, something surprising happened: For the first time I can remember, my results actually changed.
Now, I’ve always been Earth Green through and through — that’s been my anchor every single time. But this year, my profile showed something different: Sunshine Yellow moved into the number two spot, and Cool Blue softened.
When I saw that, I sat back and thought, “Huh. That’s new.”
And then, “That actually makes sense.”
A Quick Refresher on Insights Discovery
If you’re new to Insights, here’s a quick overview. It’s a personality tool based on the work of Carl Jung that uses four color energies to describe how we prefer to think, behave, and interact with others.
Fiery Red energy is about action, results, and directness.
Sunshine Yellow energy brings enthusiasm, connection, and optimism.
Earth Green energy centers on empathy, patience, and relationships.
Cool Blue energy focuses on accuracy, order, and reflection.
We all have all four energies — the magic lies in the blend that’s most natural to us. It’s not about boxing us in, but rather about giving us a mirror for self-awareness — a way to understand our tendencies and how to flex them with intention.
My 2025 Profile Shift
So here’s what changed for me.
In my conscious profile — that’s the “how I show up on purpose” part — my Earth Green actually went up even higher. I’m sitting at 100% Green now. Cool Blue, which has always been my secondary, moved down to third. And Sunshine Yellow, which used to sit in third, moved into that number two spot. Fiery Red also ticked up slightly.
In my less conscious profile — which reflects what happens under stress or in the background — my Yellow came up, while Blue and Red softened a bit.
At first, I wondered if I’d just answered the questions differently. But the more I reflected, the more I realized: this actually mirrors the internal work I’ve been doing over the past few years.
Growth That Shows Up in Color
The Insights model reminds us that we can develop and flex any of the color energies — we’re not fixed. Over the last few years, I’ve been intentionally working on dialing up my voice, my confidence, and my visibility — especially as a business owner and a coach.
And guess what color energy represents visibility, enthusiasm, and optimism? Yep — Sunshine Yellow.
So that movement from Blue to Yellow didn’t mean I’ve “lost” my analytical side. It meant that I’ve been leaning into something that once felt more uncomfortable — being seen, expressing, connecting — and now, it’s become more natural.
My Cool Blue didn’t disappear; it simply softened. I’m still detail-oriented and thoughtful, but I’m less caught up in needing everything to be perfect. That’s been a huge area of growth — releasing perfection and over-preparation, and allowing a little more flow, a little more “good enough” energy.
That shift also reflects a deeper truth: when we do ongoing self-awareness work — through coaching, therapy, reflection, and intentional practice — our habits of mind and emotion evolve. And when those internal patterns shift, they can absolutely show up in tools like Insights.
Conscious vs. Less Conscious — Why It Matters
I always tell clients: your conscious profile is how you intend to show up, and your less conscious profile is what happens automatically when you’re under pressure or not thinking about it.
Seeing both of mine change told me something powerful — that the work I’ve been doing to stay grounded, to let go of control, and to trust myself more — it’s not just cognitive. It’s actually landing.
Because when our less conscious patterns shift, it means something deep inside has integrated. It’s no longer about trying to behave differently — it’s about actually being different.
Leadership Lessons from a Color Shift
Here’s what I take from this experience — and what I share with clients when they retake Insights after a few years:
Self-awareness is alive. It’s not a one-time download of information; it’s a living, breathing process. Who you are at 35 might look different at 45 — not because you’ve changed your essence, but because you’ve expanded.
Growth shows up subtly. Sometimes the evidence of inner work isn’t loud. It might be the way you handle stress differently, or the energy you bring into a room.
Development isn’t about replacing one color with another. It’s about learning to dial — to know when to lean into Blue precision, when to bring Yellow energy, when to ground in Green empathy, and when to move with Red action.
The goal is integration. Leadership magic happens when all four energies can dance together — when we’re not overusing one to hide another.
Revisit and Reflect
If you’ve taken Insights before, it might be worth checking in again — especially if it’s been 18 to 24 months. You might be surprised by what’s shifted.
You don’t have to retake it to start reflecting, though. Ask yourself:
Where am I showing up differently today than I was a few years ago?
Which color energy have I dialed up recently?
Which one might need a little more space to breathe?
Growth doesn’t mean becoming someone else. It means becoming more of who you truly are — with awareness, intention, and heart.
The Magic of Self-Awareness
That’s what this whole journey has reinforced for me: self-awareness really is the pixie dust. It’s the magic that allows us to notice, adjust, and evolve — both in leadership and in life.
I haven’t changed who I am. I’ve simply expanded the way I show up. I’m still grounded in empathy and connection — that Earth Green anchor — but now there’s a little more voice, a little more confidence, and a lot more color shining through.
What Do You Think?
Have you noticed expansion in your personality? Or are there areas you would like to expand?
