I can’t believe I’m celebrating 200 episodes of Leadership Magic!
The origin story
Leadership Magic didn’t start with that name. I originally launched “The Practically Perfect Leader”—a little Mary Poppins nod—because I wanted a real, human space to talk about leadership beneath titles, strategies, and to-do lists. I wanted to validate and share what I’d learned through HR, coaching, and life—and to lower the walls that confidentiality and compliance can sometimes build.
What the first 199 titles revealed
Early themes focused on defining leadership and the magic of self-awareness—your story, your why, your values. Over time, the focus shifted to practice: leading through change, building confidence, communicating with compassion, and navigating the human parts of leadership. Recently, there’s a sense of calm integration. I also formally introduced my framework—the three keys to Leadership Magic: character, confidence, connection.
What I know for sure (so far)
Leadership is human first. Beyond job descriptions and results, it’s humans leading humans. Whole-person leadership is impactful leadership.
Communication and change are perennial core work. They’re always important, always challenging, and always worth the reps. The foundation is knowing yourself, your biases, listening deeply, asking better questions, and understanding how humans move through change.
Clarity isn’t perfection or certainty. Clear is kind—but clarity also means naming what we know, being honest about what we don’t, and adjusting as we go.
Authenticity isn’t comfort—it’s alignment. Getting honest about your values and your why can feel uncomfortable. That discomfort often signals growth.
Curiosity and compassion are superpowers. Turn them inward and outward. Get curious about your beliefs and blind spots—and pair the discovery with self-compassion instead of self-critique.
The stories we tell shape how we lead. Our thoughts drive feelings, actions, and results—so notice the story and rewrite it when it isn’t serving you.
Connection is everything. Disconnection breeds stories, isolation, and disengagement. Rebuild connection to people, purpose, the work, the org—and yourself.
Self-awareness is the pixie dust. It’s the foundation under character, confidence, and connection—and the through-line of this show.
The ripple effect
Leaders don’t just manage tasks; they shape lives. Leadership done well doesn’t just change organizations—it elevates the human experience. Let’s keep elevating humanity, one leader, one action at a time.
