Message from Grandma Paguro

Kicking off your week with some thoughts around a favorite Disney quote (because in my world - Disney is life!).

Happy Monday!
Happy first Monday of October! Where I am – change is definitely in the air…and nature’s landscape. I do love this time of year – even though I’m not as accepting of what comes next (🥶❄️).
This week’s quote is a little longer than usual. It is from Disney’s 2021 animated film, Luca. I won’t go into the storyline or the context of the quote (because if you aren’t familiar – you really just need to watch it. It’s so darn good). Luca’s grandma said this about Luca:
What this quote sparks for me is the recognition of the sneaky little internal expectation that some of us carry. The one that wants to be liked by everyone. To be accepted by all. The one that can quietly slide into people-pleasing.
It’s a voice that I’ve faced myself. So have most of the clients I work with.
What I’ve learned is the very thing that Grandma Paguro is getting at.
Not everyone is going to accept me. And that's okay.
For a long time, I treated that as a problem to solve. If someone didn't like me, I'd try harder. That would look like saying yes more (when I really wanted to say no), smoothing things over or giving in a little more. Even though I wasn’t always aware of it – it was exhausting. And also – it pulled my focus away from the people who actually liked me as I am!
If you really think about it - - who actually really connects with everyone? Nobody. And that’s the point.
Finding your people happens when you're willing to show up as yourself - unapologetically.
So don’t let the ‘good’ ones miss out on all you have to share because you're busy trying to be liked by everyone.
The next time you feel the pull to please, pause and ask: Am I doing this because I want to, or because I want them to like me?
